Board Member Position Description

Location: Remote with optional site engagement in Ndoombo, Tanzania

 

Commitment: 4-6 hours per month

 

Term Length: 1 year, renewable

 

Reports To: Board Chair

About Mt. Meru Tumaini Health Clinic

 

Mt. Meru Tumaini Health Clinic (MMTHC) is a nonprofit organization established in 2002, dedicated to providing accessible, high-quality healthcare to the underserved communities of Mt. Meru region near Arusha Tanzania. We are the support organization based in the US for the Ndoombo Community Dispensary located on the slopes of Mt. Meru. It is the fulfillment of a dream of the late Moses Mbise who served in the community as a pastor doing funerals for many community members who died of preventable causes. Our mission is rooted in compassion, dignity, equity, and community empowerment. 

 

We are a growing organization looking for engaged board members to help us expand our reach, build long-term sustainability, and ensure excellent care continues to be delivered where it’s needed most. 

Role Summary 

 

Board Members serve as strategic leaders, governance stewards, and mission ambassadors. They support MMTHC by contributing their time, expertise, and networks to guide the organization’s vision and ensure its financial health and mission integrity. 
 

Key Responsibilities 

 

  • Mission Oversight: Ensure MMTHC stays aligned with its mission and values.

  • Strategic Leadership: Participate in shaping and evaluating the dispensary’s long-term goals and plans. 

  • Financial Stewardship: Review and approve budgets, support financial sustainability, and oversee accountability. 

  • Fundraising & Outreach: Leverage personal and professional networks to support fundraising efforts; make a meaningful annual contribution via time or money. 

  • Ambassadorship: Serve as an advocate for MMTHC in your community and professional circles.

  •  Board Engagement: Attend quarterly hybrid board meetings, join at least one committee, and participate in strategic planning discussions. 

  • Governance:  Assist with recruitment and onboarding for new board members and contribute to board evaluations. 

 

Desired Qualifications

 

We are especially seeking candidates with experience in: 

  • Finance or accounting

  • Nonprofit governance, leadership, or law

  • Fundraising, grant writing, or donor development

  • Healthcare (clinical, administrative, or global health experience)

  • International development

 

Additionally, ideal candidates will demonstrate: 

  • A passion for health equity and social justice

  • Collaborative spirit and respect for diverse perspectives

  • Willingness to take initiative and engage actively
